POORMAN, GEORGE ANDERSON

George Anderson Poorman, 90, passed away May 17, 2016 in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Lois Errett Poorman in 2005. He was a member of Palms Presbyterian Church, participating in the Love Callers Program and other activities until health issues forced him to reduce his many social & creative outlets.
Born July 5, 1925, in New Stanton, PA, to Frank Ewing Poorman and Caroline Anderson Poorman, George grew up in a family of 8 children. He graduated from Gettysburg College in 1949 after serving in the United States Navy during WWII. He entered the Real Estate business in 1957 in Greensburg, PA, and was active in real estate & civic organizations. He served as President of the Central Westmoreland Board of Realtors and President of the Pennsylvania Association of Realtors.
He authored a textbook, “Modern Real Estate Practice in Pennsylvania”. He was on the faculty of Penn State University and served as the Dean of the Pennsylvania Realtors Institute. He was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and was certified as a lay minister, performing as interim pastor for two rural churches for many years. In addition to his business and civic duties, George worked on his 60 acre farm, raising beef cattle and vegetables. He built a barn and house on the property, using as a second home & retreat. In 1979 he and Lois “retired” to Ft. Myers, Florida. After three months he rejoined the real estate profession as manager of a local office. 
He remained active in church activities, & indulged his creativity in woodworking projects, building jewelry boxes, clocks,  cabinets, trays, beds, book shelves & even doghouses.  In 2004, he and Lois moved to Jacksonville Beach to be with their family.
He is survived by his daughter, Rebecca, & her husband, Carl Goff, & their sons, Errett  & Carlisle, of Jacksonville Beach; a sister, Sara Giron, of Greensburg, PA; two brothers, Don, of North Huntington, PA, & Tom, of Beverly Hills, FL; and many nieces & nephews who consider him to be their favorite uncle.
In lieu of flowers please consider a memorial to Palms Presbyterian Church. Funeral services were held at 2pm Tuesday, May 31 at Palms Presbyterian Church, Jacksonville Beach.
