Bill Lyne (William John) departed this life on April 15, 2017 to see his family and friends who had gone before him.
Bill is survived by his mother, Joan C. Williford, sister Diane Lyne-Harker (Russell), Leslie Lyne, his children, Ashlie Lyne(Shane), Mandy Dancel (Philip), Zachary Lyne (Amy); Bill’s grandchildren, Will, Skylar, Sienna, Austin, Simon, and many friends all whom Bill adored.
Bill was born in Miami, Florida in 1946 but spent the majority of his formative years in Hendersonville, N.C. Bill graduated from the Blue Ridge School for Boys in 1965 and headed to Wofford College graduating in 1969. Bill moved to Jacksonville, Florida to start his career teaching in the Duval County School System. He taught at Wolfson High School and successfully organized and facilitated the first high school Presidential mock convention at the Civic Auditorium in 1972. High school students from the entire county participated. Presidential candidates Shirley Chisholm and John Lindsey, and Oscar winner Warren Beatty addressed the attendees. Upon leaving the educational system, Bill had a successful career in the furniture industry for 43 years. Politics was Bill’s passion and hobby, and ran for the Florida State Legislature in 1972.
Bill resided at the Beaches for the past 35 years. He loved the beach, the N.C. mountains, lots of conversation (he never met a stranger), lively political debates, and the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was a connoisseur BBQ, wings, drinking beer, or sipping “brown water.” To celebrate Bill’s life a gathering is planned for Saturday, May 13, 2017. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his memory to the American Diabetes Association, or the American Heart Association.
